Of Phuket's 29 Buddhist monasteries, Wat Chalong is the biggest and the most beautifully ornamented.
At 180 years old this temple has a long history and is visited by many locals and Thai tourists due to its association with healing.
The most recent building on the grounds of Wat Chalong is a 60 meters tall dome structure (known as a Chedi), within it is a splinter of bone from Buddha that was brought to the temple, from Sri Lanka, by the current king of Thailand.
The Chedi's walls and ceilings are decorated with beautiful painting illustrating the lives of Buddha, and within it are many golden statues. The Wat Chalong Chedi is built on three floors so feel free to climb all the way to the top floor terrace to get a nice birds view, of the entire temple grounds.
