Building a Cardboard Boat to Race

Building a Cardboard Boat to Race is one of our most popular additional educational activities.

This is a fantastic activity for getting groups of students, working together and competing to build and race a boat made from the most unlikely materials (cardboard and Sticky tape). The Race can be conducted on the beach at our exclusive watersports centre at Ao Yon Bay in Phuket or at other locations such as Krabi Boat Lagoon.

Building a Cardboard Boat

This really is the ultimate teambuilding activity and stimulates the students with its creativity; he students have to design and test their ideas and work cooperatively. Its a challenging task, memorable and above all fun! Students will take away memories of a really great activity and learn a lot about the power of cooperation and problem solving.

Building the boat out of cardboard

Your group will be split into teams of between 6 and 12 students and will either be given the instructions needed to build a cardboard boat or the project of designing and building their own boat with the common aim that it will float safely with two people inside. The boat must be capable of racing out about 50 metres and back to the beach. The teams are given about 2 to 2½ hours to complete our boats, or 4 to 5 hrs to build their own. Points are awarded for quality of build, creativity, efficient use of resources, teambuilding skills and, of course, for completing the boat in time (and it not sinking!!).

The race is a relay race around a mark

The race is a relay race around a mark anchored just off the shore. Its a delight to see the excitement and total enjoyment of this activity. Students love it! We suggest that videos and still photos be taken by students for a log or end of trip performance.
