ISSA Keelboat Skipper Course

A new course for Sail in Asia. The Keelboat Skipper course is a five day, mostly hands on course, for students who are  interested in learning to sail one of our fleet of Farr designed Platu 25's.

Our new course is set in Phuket's coastal waters in Ao Yon Bay and the surrounding islands.  Our Keelboat Skipper course is one of the most exciting courses we offer with a huge amount of time on the water.  Affordable and fun, these yachts offer everything you'd find in a larger yacht and more.  If you learn to sail a keelboat well, it's easy moving onto a cruising or racing yacht.

The course starts with a two day almost 100% Learn to Sail course and then on Day 3 you learn more advanced techniques such as anchoring, reefing under sail, heaving to, coming up to a mooring under engine and sail and of course Man Overboard.  Day 4 and day 5  are spent on a final planned 2 Day Trip usually to an island.  The 5 day course and two day trip includes an optional night under canvas. The two days of flotilla sailing really add to the satisfaction and competence of the crew.

The full syllabus is to be found in the table below.  The great benefit of completing this course is that one can sign up for an IYT Watch Keeper course or be capable of joining a Flotilla sailing holiday course in the future.

The theory includes lectures on Chartwork, Fixing Position, Crew Management and many other important subjects that require knowledge and understanding by a trainee skipper.  The most important aspect of this course is, of course safety, and what makes a good skipper!

Information about ISSA Keelboat Skipper Course

Our new 5 day  Keelboat Skipper course offers your students the chance to get out on Phuket's beautiful clear tropical waters and learn to sail a keelboat to a Keelboat Skipper Standard.

The course is aimed at 5 days of practical sailing with some shore time in a classroom. Students learn through practical experience and the theory is mostly learned and taught on the water.

Information about the ISSA Skipper Course is available in a handbook that is provided for each student. This is a 85% practical experiential learning course for beginners, with an instructor in attendance, on every boat. The instructor usually leaves the boat on day 4 to enable the crew to manage the boat by themselves for the next two days. This is of course contingent on factors such as weather and student aptitude.  High quality coaching is the key to learning quickly and our programme is highly regarded.

Non-swimmers will be able to participate in all our courses as PFD's are mandatory for all students.

Check out the course curriculum, in the table below, to review what will be taught and what is entailed in bringing your students to an Outdoor Education in Asia, Keelboat Skippers Course.
