Keelboat mate

IYT Keel Boat (Mate) Course for Teachers

This IYT Intermediate keelboat course is for teachers with some sailing ability; it is not a beginner’s course. Teachers should hold the ISSA Keelboat Crew certificate, or some similar level qualification to qualify for enrolling on this course.

The Mate on a keelboat is the number 2 to a Skipper, and can be relied on to take over at the helm where required and also be capable of mentoring other crew members. The students need to know about Basic Chartwork and a range of nautical theory such as Tides, Weather, and how to pilot a yacht. This means that the mate is a valuable keeper of the watch and can be relied upon to make helpful observations on the water. There are further details of the subjects you will study in theory and skills and techniques you will practice in our IYT (Mate) Handbook, which all teachers receive before course start.

IYT Keelboat (Mate) course for teachers

A Hands-on Sailing Course

Although there is a significant theoretical component that doesn’t mean just sitting in a classroom. The Mates course is very much a hands-on course that teaches you by getting you out there on the water.

We practice what you have just learnt (in our comfortable, air-conditioned classroom – yes there is some classroom time). Our experienced instructors will guide you through the course ensuring you have a rewarding and enjoyable experience as you learn.
As well as practicing your Mates skills you’ll get further practice in sailing and handling the keelboat. You need to consistently improve and build on skills as you progress through the training scheme. This is the first level at which you gain some command skills so it’s a big step. This is also the first level of training where we get serious with the theory required to safely and competently sail a small yacht.
